SRC Running Community

The Sweatshop Running Community was originally set up to encourage people who had never run before to start running, in a safe environment, supported by more experienced runners. The club now supports a wide range of runners from absolute beginners, to sub 50 min 10K runners, with many runners improving all the time.

The Sweatshop team have kindly agreed to letting us join in with their runs. The runs start on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, 7pm, from Sweatshop at the David Lloyd gym in Monifieth. There’s usually 3K, 5K and 8K options from which to choose. Some M3ers are already regular visitors, and sometime ‘coach’ the sessions by leading off one of the groups. There’s usually jelly babies, and the like for those who’ve completed a run, and if you’re a member of DL, you can always cool down with a swim set!

You’ll be asked to sign up before your first run, and Sweatshop will keep track of how many runs you do. There’s free stuff on offer:

1st week – FREE bottle of Lucozade lite.
5 weeks – FREE adidas Sweatshop Running Community technical t–shirt (worth £14.99 – also available to buy).
25 weeks – FREE Lucozade nutrition pack.
30 weeks – FREE Sweatshop lifestyle t–shirt.
50 weeks – FREE Garmin Forerunner 610.

Here’s a couple of sample 5K routes the club do, to whet your appetite…

Route 2

Camperdown parkrun

The club supports the local parkrun: a free, weekly, 5k timed run, in Camperdown park. It’s a fantastic course – tough, hilly, multi-surface, and safe. Each week the parkrun team set up the park, and time everyone though course, publishing the results on the web, tracking your performance, and your improvement over time. It’s open to all ages, it’s free, and it’s great fun.

To take part in parkrun you need to register at the parkrun website, and print off a barcode. This is your unique identifier that allows you to run at any of the 170+ parkruns around the UK. There are other parkruns in Scotland – Crammond (Edinburgh), Falkirk, Aberdeen, Pollak (Glasgow), Strathclyde (Motherwell) and St Andrews.

Tom Fardon is one of the run directors up at parkrun, so look out for him up there – 09:30 start, every Saturday, starting from the wee car park by the football pitches, along from the East entrance to the park.

We go to the cafe afterwards for cakes and cups of tea.

Speed Sessions

Running – speed training.

Venue: Mayfield Sports Centre, 193 Arbroath Road, Dundee, DD4 7HS (see map).

The aim of these is to improve your speed. Training will be on the following dates:-

Wednesday 1st May 19.15
Wednesday 8th May 19.15
Wednesday 15th May 19.15
Wednesday 22nd May 19.15
Wednesday 29th May 19.15

Start with a warm-up at 7.15pm sharp; please don’t start taking part unless you’ve warmed up as it’s easy to strain a muscle if you go straight into speed work. You will be on grass that might be wet so wear appropriate footwear. Sessions are intended to be short and sharp and will last approximately 30-40 minutes. Coach will turn up whatever the weather to avoid any confusion about cancellation, etc. but will leave sharpish if no-one comes. We may have to curtail the session in wet conditions for safety. The sessions will include warm-up and cool-down. Look forward to seeing you there.

Cycling

There are currently no organised cycling sessions.

Swimming

We are happy to say we offer swimming coaching every Thursday.

The first session runs from 7.00 to 8.00 and is aimed at less experienced swimmers and concentrates on the basics of technique, especially in freestyle, but will include elements to build speed and endurance. Technique is however the cornerstone of both of these, and individual instruction is facilitated by the format of the sessions.

The 8:00-9.00 session is aimed at more experienced swimmers and includes more endurance and speed work, though there are plenty of drill drills and technique too!

There is a £4 supplementary charge for each swim session.

Swim Video Analysis

The club recently purchased a high definition underwater camera to carry out poolside swim analysis. When time permits the Thursday sessions have a lane dedicated to swim analysis, with capacity for 3 or 4 swimmers per hour. Videos can be made available to the swimmer, and our experienced coaches can give detailed feedback at poolside, and later on-line. If you wish to have swim video analysis you must complete the consent forms, downloadable below:
